On September 18, 2008, David R. Ruby will be speaking at a seminar in Richmond entitled "Commercial and Real Estate Loan Documents in Virginia: More Than Just Papers." David’s topic will include enforcing loan and security agreements under the Uniform Commercial Code and creditor rights and strategies in bankruptcy. The seminar is sponsored by Lorman Education Services.
Michele Mulligan was a guest speaker at a legislative update seminar sponsored by the Central Virginia Chapter of the Community Association Institute. Michele, along with three other speakers, addressed new legislative changes affecting community associations in central Virginia, including House Bill 516. The panel met on August 18, 2008, in Palmyra, Virginia and again on August 19, 2008, in Midlothian, Virginia.
Pat McSweeney, Wes Russell and Kristie Haynes successfully argued to the Virginia Supreme Court that sovereign immunity did not bar two users of the Dulles Toll Road from suing the Secretary of Transportation to enjoin the executive branch from deeding the Dulles Toll Road to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority without explicit authorization from the General Assembly. In June, 2008, Thamer “Chip” E. Temple III was elected Vice President of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond, and he will continue to serve on that Association’s Executive Committee. In the same month, Chip was inducted as President-Elect of the West Richmond Rotary Club. By virtue of that position, he will also serve on the Board of the West Richmond Rotary Foundation.

The Board of Trustees for the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (“LLS”) recently elected G. William “Bill” Norris, Jr. as its Vice-President for 2009. Bill has served on the LLS Board since 2005.
R. Paul Childress, Jr. and Nathan A. Colarusso successfully defended a Richmond-area attorney in a legal malpractice case filed in Hanover County Circuit Court. During the two-day trial, held in mid-June, several interesting legal issues were argued, particularly one related to a novel defense related to construction litigation.
Beverley L. Crump and Catherine C. Ayres were re-elected to the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond for the 2008-2009 term. Beverley and Catherine were charter members of the Executive Committee, which was recently formed in 2007. Beverley was the Chairman of the Business Law Section for the 2007-2008 term.
